SYMPHONY
2024
I hold onto things.
I collect shells because I feel I am from the sea.
I keep Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower stored in my car
because it feels like a future trail guide.
I still have all the lumber and both ladders from my last dance piled in my hallway
because I can’t bring myself to get rid of them.
They seem like they might come in handy one day.
I hold onto things.
I’m like my grandmother that way.
Her name was also marion
save everything–it might come in handy one day. At the same time, be attached to nothing–it all might be gone in a moment. SYMPHONY is a feminine, feminist interdisciplinary solo project examining the role of nostalgia in the apocalypse. Through movement, vocalization, projection and installation, I study fossils from my lineage and everyday life: my parents' excavation slides, black trash bags, sphinxes, my great great grandfather's lithography stones, Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, rising sea levels, smoke-filled skies, the blue sky and the ladder and blue light bulb from my last dance. Part shrine to and in question of what we hold onto and why, this work asks – ‘how do we archive’, ‘where do we put our things’, ‘what must we let go of’ and ‘what can we still dream for’ in a world of imminent climate catastrophe? Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, Elizabeth Kolbert's Under a White Sky: The Nature of the Future, and Daniel Sherrell's Warmth: Coming of Age at the End of the World are texts informing this research, offering lessons on the nature of being alive and embodied while the world falls apart.
