ecdysis

2026+ (in development)

ecdysis is a solo project in development and part of a series of solos excavating lineage, embodiment and dreams amidst onrushing climate catastrophe. This work is feminine, feminist, interdisciplinary and inspired by shedding - physical, emotional, decolonial and archival. Studying adaptation as experimental, intuitive and a practice of futurity, this project asks – ‘what can we learn from our nonhuman teachers about the intersection of shedding and adaptation?’ ‘what do we let go of’ and ‘what do we still dream for’ at the end of this world?

ecdysis is the second in a series of solos marion has been making exploring the nature of being alive and embodied while the world falls apart. [ecdysis (noun): the process where an animal sheds its outer layer, called the cuticle or exoskeleton, to allow for growth, renewal and development.] Texts informing this research are poet Destiny Hemphill’s “motherworld: a devotional for the alter-life, ” scientist Charles Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species,” writer Octavia Butler’s “Parable of the Talents” and legal scholar Cheryl Harris’ “Whiteness as Property.” Sound by MANAS (Tashi Dorji + Thom Nguyen)  & marion spencer, with projection, text, performance and choreography by marion spencer.
